APTA Michigan Institute for Education and Research: Grants

The APTA Michigan Institute for Education and Research was created by the APTA Michigan Board of Directors to provide a tax sheltered non-profit entity to promote research and education related to physical therapy in the State of Michigan. Annually scholarships, research grants, and awards are given out by the institute to encourage research and the continuation of the physical therapy profession.

Please note that APTA Michigan Membership is required for all grant recipients.

APTA Michigan Institute Research & Education Grant Program & Application

 

As part of its role in supporting and encouraging research in the State of Michigan, the APTA Michigan Institute for Education and Research has a large research/education grant program that is intended to provide out-of-pocket expenses/seed money for either basic or clinical research related to physical therapy and to encourage the development of new projects.

 

Funding:          Up to 4 grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded in 2025.  Additional grants may be awarded if funding is available.  All of the money must be directly used for the research study (it cannot be used for future costs associated with a presentation such as conference registration, travel expenses, poster printing, etc.).

 

Eligibility:        Professional membership in the APTA Michigan is required for the primary investigator.  The primary investigator must also be a licensed physical therapist/physical therapist assistant or a PT/PTA student (with an established faculty advisor) within the state of Michigan.

 

    Deadline:        Application deadline is August 1st of each year.

 

Submission:    Applications must be submitted electronically

 

Commitment: Grant recipients must agree to present their research findings at the APTA Michigan Fall Conference after completion of the study.  Researchers should submit an abstract to the APTA Michigan Fall Conference Research Committee according to established procedures and should acknowledge the Institute as a source of funding.

The cover letter should contain:

 

  1. Primary Investigator = include the primary investigator’s name, employer (school for students), address, telephone number, e-mail, & APTA/APTA Michigan membership number.
  2. Co-Investigators = include each co-investigator’s name.
  3. Projected initiation & completion dates.
  4. Institutional Review Board status.
  5. Budget = include an itemized table of all expenses and the anticipated monetary amount for each expense (also include all other sources of financial support for the proposed project).

 

The abstract should be a brief description of the proposed project including the title, purpose, methods, and potential relevance of the study to physical therapy.   It should be no longer than one single-spaced page.  

 

Purpose:        To support research in physical therapy clinical education in conjunction with the APTA Michigan Institute for Education and Research as charged in the APTA MI CEC Standing Rules.

                                               

Funding:        The APTA MI CEC will annually provide, based upon availability, one grant of up to $500. Awarding the clinical education research grant on behalf of the APTA MI CEC does not restrict the APTA Michigan Institute for Education and Research from awarding other grants for clinical education topics. All of the money must be directly used for the research study (it cannot be used for future costs associated with a presentation such as conference registration, travel expenses, poster printing, etc.).

Commitment: The clinical education research grant recipient will be required to present their completed research study at an APTA MI CEC bi-annual meeting during the year following the grant award. A copy of the final research product for dissemination will be provided to the APTA MI CEC. Acknowledgement of the APTA MI CEC and the APTA Michigan Institute for Education and Research must be included on the paper, product, and/or in the presentation.
