About Professional Development Requirements

The State of Michigan requires 24 PDRs every 2 years.  A PDR is the equivalent of the CEU but empasses more activities beyond the traditional CEU.  Please see our detailed PDR resource above. Only 20 PDRs can come from CEUs.  Implicit Bias and Human Trafficking are also outside of this requirement. There are 17 other ways to earn PDRs besides the traditional route. Our resource should answer many of your questions.

We have a resource for that question as well.  Pay special attention to the second step included

CEU Locker (linked above) is your FREE resource for tracking and storing all of your PDRs. All of your records are stored electronically and available with a few clicks in case you are audited.

With the move away from the previous license renewal date, you will now renew on the date you were initially licensed.  This does not mean you'll need extra or pro-rated PDRs.  The two-year look back period still applies from your new expiration date. For example, if your license renewal changed from July 31st 2024 to June 24th, 2025, you will still only need 24 PDRs plus 2 hours of implicit bias within the two immediate prior years to your renewal date.

This is a ONE TIME requirement. Licensees only need to take this course once.

No, the 2 PDR credits from Implicit Bias and 1 PDR for Human Trafficking do not count toward the required 24 PDR credits for license renewal.

LARA announced in June of 2024 that Physical Therapy will now be on a three year licensure cycle. We fully anticipate that you will now be required to complete 36 PDRs and 3 hours of Implicit Bias training. As of the present, new rules regarding specific PDR requirements for each category have not been written. APTA Michigan will await a general rules revision and inform its members when changes have been approved and codified. Stay tuned!

Activity code A applies to any course that has been approved for continuing education by another qualifying entity listed in our PDR resource (Including Other States, APTA, & Academies/Sections). If you are consuming other audio and video media that is not presented in a traditional online educational format, that is related to physical therapy and is not approved for CEUs, you can complete the general response form for this requirement.
