Did you know you can see a PT without a referral from a physician? In the state of Michigan, you an receive treatment from your physical therapist for up to 21 days or 10 visits (whichever is sooner) without first going to see a physician. Your therapist can then communicate with your physician and continued care can be approved. In cases where you are seeking treatment for prevention and wellness, there is no time or visit limit and no physician approval is needed. Physical therapists are movement experts who use hands-on treatment, prescribed exercise and education to help people reach their activity goals and improve quality of life. This may be through treating pain, optimizing recovery from an injury, illness or surgery, maximizing quality of life with cancer and chronic diseases, improving balance or treating other movement impairments such as vestibular disorders. If it involves movement a physical therapist can most likely help, from prevention of injury and disease to keeping your independence through your aging years. Physical therapy is a personalized treatment that can only be provided by physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs). PTAs are educated and licensed clinicians who provide care under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist. PTs and PTAs work in many settings including hospitals, outpatient clinics, fitness facilities, patient homes, nursing facilities, schools, work settings and more.
